Ten English Learning Commandments

I have been teaching English as a Foreign/Second Language for over three years now in such exotic places as Poland and Alaska. Students are always asking me how they can improve their English without spending hours memorising lists of vocabulary (only to be forgotten 20 minutes later) or ploughing through tedious and dry grammar exercises. After years of being asked this I have finally decided to compile a list of the top ten things a language student can do (without wasting an eternity in boredom) in improve their abilities. As a learner of French myself these tips have proven invaluable. So if you are an English student, or a learner of any language, here you are:

1) Set yourself small and achievable goals
These can be based on all aspects of English from speaking to writing. Your target could be to learn 5 new words a day OR learn vocabulary on the topic of travel for that holiday to England you always dreamed of. By keeping the goals small you will stay motivated and not feel overwhelmed!

2) Do 5-10 minutes of listening 4 times a week
Listen to your favourite English song (pronounce along if you like) or survey a bit of an English film, listen to the radio or utilize Internet listening resources such as those on the BBC website. Don’t always have a pen in your hand, sometimes it helps to just listen-this is after all the first thing babies do when learning to speak!

3) Talk to yourself in English
No, this doesn’t mean you are crazy! When alone in your house talk to yourself about anything and everything. This will help to improve your pronunciation and become familiar with your own voice in English.

4) Picture your own voice
I know this can be embarrassing but I promise it is useful. By re-playing the recoding a few days later you will hear where your pronunciation weak points are and so be able to practice and improve these areas.

5) Read something everyday for 5-10 minutes
Make obvious it is at the appropriate level and most importantly that it interests you-if it is too difficult or unprejudiced plain boring you won’t learn anything. When you have finished quickly summarize (writing or speaking) using – who, when, where, what and how – as prompts.

6) Hold a personal dictionary of new words
When reading or listening write down any unusual words in your personal dictionary. Write down what part of speech they are, and invent a sample sentence with them. Spend a few minutes before be each night reviewing this.

7) Keep a diary or journal
This doesn’t have to be a long and in-depth thing, just employ about 10 minutes 3 times a week writing this. Don’t always pay attention to grammar, learn to enjoy writing. Improvement comes with practice.

8) Re-write your local news in English
If you don’t want the personal approach of a diary then try re-writing the news in English. Remember to do it for a short time often! Sort, regular, intense session are more beneficial than long and irregular ones.

9) Always use an English-English dictionary
DO NOT us a ‘your language’-English dictionary! It is a bad habit to always rely on translation. Imagine the satisfaction you will feel when you translate something with your own brain!

10) Treat Yourself
Perhaps the most important rule! Always reward yourself when you carry out one of the targets you area. The reward can be in the form of good food, or a new toy to play with, even a nice weekend away with a loved one. Whatever makes you happy! Rewards will sustain you motivated!

GOOD LUCK!!!

Thank You For Everything

Today  I would like you to read an article by AJ Hoge the creator of Effortless English. This time is not about English learning but about philosophy of life and the way you should live to be happy and successful.

"Life is always full of challenging and difficult situations. In business, no matter how much positive thinking you do, you will always have big problems sometimes. There are things you cannot control– such as the global economy– that can cause a lot of problems for your business.

In our personal lives, difficult and complex situations will always happen too. We can get sick… or people we love might get sick. Relationships change. People die. One day, we die.
We cannot avoid all of these situations. And often, we cannot control them.

Sometimes people believe that “the secret” of positive thinking will help them avoid all big problems and have good luck all the time. This is not true. We all know it’s not true, because you only need to look at your own life to see that difficult situations always keep coming, no matter how you think.

The secret is NOT to avoid difficult situations– the secret is HOW you react to difficult situations. Most people face these situations by complaining, or becoming depressed, or quitting, or getting angry. When you do this, of course, you only make the situation worse… and it’s easy to then become a pessimistic defeated person.

We can’t choose all of the events in our lives, but we CAN choose how we handle them.

The question is, what do you do about it? How you face difficult and painful situations is probably more important than what you do when everything is easy and wonderful.
It’s easy to be positive and strong and kind when everything is the way you want it to be. But what about when things don’t happen as you want?

What I have found in my life is this: when painful things happen we always feel bad, of course. But if we can nonetheless stay positive and find learning, growth, and opportunity during these times our lives can become magnificent. In the future, we will often look back to these events and be thankful for the difficulty and pain, because they pushed us to grow.

Here’s a small example from my life: I was teaching at a university in Thailand and I enjoyed my job. The students were great. However, at that time I was trying a lot of new teaching methods. The students LOVED the new methods,… but one day my boss found out that I was not following the standard textbook and methods. He also found out that I was giving a lot of my students good grades. The boss had a meeting with me and he told me I had to use only the textbook… and had to lower my students’ grades.
He said if I didn’t, I would lose my job. I thought about it and then said, “No”. I quit and lost the job. At the time, it seemed like a horrible situation. I was stressed about money. I was stressed about finding another job. I felt really terrible.

BUT, I decided to remain positive and focus on opportunities. This event, in fact, made me realize that I had to start my own company… so I could be free to teach as I wanted. I realized I could never serve my students if I had a boss telling me what to do.

It was painful then, but now I am soooo grateful for that event. That painful event is one reason I eventually started Effortless English. Today, I am much much happier as a teacher. I’m helping so many more students. My teaching methods are much more powerful. Today, I am extremely grateful for that painful event.
If it had not happened, perhaps I would still be teaching at schools… secure but bored. Instead, I am living my dream.

Whenever I face very difficult situations, I remember this story.
I remember that the ultimate meditation or prayer is not to pray for luck or for help,… nor to ask for anything. Rather, the ultimate expression of faith is to simply and always be grateful.. and to find gratitude in all situations.
And so in these times, I focus on my favorite zen saying/meditation/prayer, and I say it often:
“Thank you for everything. I have no complaints whatsoever”

Achieve English fluency using special audio English Lessons

To achieve English fluency in the shortest possible time you need to use right learning method. Method that let you speak English easily and communicate effortlessly.
First, imagine that your English study method is a car that will take you to your goal of fluency. If you have an old slow car, with bad gasoline, it will take you a very long time to arrive at your destination.
You have probably been driving a very slow car. What do I mean? Well, to arrive quickly at English fluency you need high-energy gasoline and a powerful engine.

English Fluency Tips:

1. Powerful Emotion and Powerful Goals
Emotion and goals are the “gasoline” of English learning. They add energy and power to any method you use. When you are motivated, when you think positively, when you are excited, when you are determined– you learn faster. Most students forget this first and very important tip. Without strong emotion, your progress will be slow… even if you use the best learning methods.
It’s like putting dirty old gasoline in a Ferrari… the engine may be great but it can’t work with bad gas. Likewise, no study method will work if your emotions are negative and low.
The first and most important tip for English fluency, therefore, is to develop big exciting goals for English and build your emotion. Develop your enthusiasm, energy, and excitement for English. Imagine your ultimate success! Imagine fantastic jobs, incredible new international friends, great confidence. Feel those emotions now!
2. Powerful Method: The Engine
Once you have super high energy gasoline, you need to put it into a fast and powerful engine.
Many students have great motivation and energy. They work very hard. They have big dreams. They have the fuel.. the gas.. for success. The problem: they are putting that energy into an old and broken engine. In other words, they are using old traditional study methods that are slow. It’s like putting race-car gas into an old 1920 Model-T car.
To get fluency fast, you need high energy (the gas) and fast powerful methods of learning English (the engine).
That’s what the 7 Rules of Effortless English are… fast powerful methods. Effortless English is a Ferrari… all you need to do is add your energy to it and arrive quickly at English fluency.

Learn How to Speak English Easily

Learning how to do something requires four key elements, which we'll consider here. I also want to look briefly at the other elements of the subject: 'how to speak English easily' and what it might mean. Here are the elements of the learning process:
  • The desire: let's face it, unless the student WANTS to learn, learning isn't going to happen. What is the motivation? For the businessman - are you doing this because the boss wants you to, or because you really want to? For the student - is the course just another course, or is this language something you really want?
  • The teacher: there's a series of advertisements on UK television which is aimed at recruiting more teachers for the state. The adverts focus in on the influence of good, charismatic teachers. A great English teacher is the one who engages you, the student, and helps you to learn.
  • The method: and there are several out there! Which one suits you and which one you can afford may be two key factors in your decision, but remember this - total immersion is the ideal, followed by as frequently as you can do or afford. Sporadic classes might be fun, but there's a lot of your time un-learning the lessons learned! I would also say that there is NO substitute for learning English from a native speaker.
  • The Practice! Without this (listening, speaking) the language won't come to life in your mouth and mind. The student has to find a way of practicing, be that a local English speaker, watching the satellite TV or taking effective English course online. Best of all, try and spend some time in an English speaking country!
Speaking English - why? It's the main International business language, for a start - so businessmen on the International stage need the language to 'get on'. Basically everyone approaching English as a second language has their own motivation, and each will be as different as the potential student! The good English teacher will quickly understand the motivation (what makes the student 'tick') and home in on that for teaching direction: if you teach something relevant and fun, then learning happens!

Finally the concept of speaking English easily. I guess that is the same as freely, fluently. Speaking any language easily implies a confidence as well as a competence with the words and phrases, vocabulary and grammar of the language. So open your mouth and try it out - with a good English teacher and learning method, you will surprise yourself!

How To Improve Your Spoken English – Online Language Improvement

How To Improve Your Spoken English – Online Language Improvement | Free Online Learning:
If you have a job where you deal with international business you may struggle with how to improve your spoken English. With so many options out there it is hard to know which method is the best. There are books, tapes, online courses and traditional English classes. It is important to consider the options carefully. While books may be convenient and cheap they often fall down when it comes to improving your conversational English. For improving conversation skills it is best to consider an option that gives you the opportunity to speak with a native speaker of English.

Native speakers are the best learning tool for you if you want to know how to improve your spoken English. People who grew up speaking English have an inherent understanding of the language. They can tell just by hearing something whether it is right. While someone who has learned the language can become quite proficient they never gain this inherent understanding. This understanding is critical to teaching a language especially English. There are phrases that seem like they are grammatically correct but just do not sound right. A native speaker has a distinct advantage when helping a student understand these kinds of phrases.

Online tools and traditional classrooms both offer the advantage of a native speaker but for many traveling business men a traditional classroom is not an option. When on the road it is still possible to log in to an online English course. If you want to know how to improve your spoken English checking out some of these sites can be a good starting point. Most of these offer some sort of personalized instruction and many resources for language learning. With many hotels now offering wireless internet access it is easier than ever to study even on the road.

Another resource for you if you want to learn how to improve your spoken English is to make friends who speak the language you want to learn. When I was studying Japanese I learned just as much about the spoken language from hanging out in bars with native speakers as I did when I was in the classroom. The one on one attention of an online English course is very similar to this since you can just speak back and forth and let the teacher correct you when you make a mistake. This will not only improve your language skills but also your confidence in speaking the language.

English Online Learning - The Ideal Way to Learn English

English Online Learning - The Ideal Way to Learn English
English online learning is one of the best ways that you can learn the English language. Being able to speak English properly is extremely important because it enables you to find a better paying job in addition to functioning and participating in English-speaking society. Those who are unable to speak English experience a variety of difficulties. For example, if you are unable to speak English you cannot order food at a restaurant. You are also unable to communicate with customer service representatives or bank tellers. By mastering the English language, you can improve your life along with the lives of your family.

You may have always wanted to take an English language course, but your available time may be limited. This is because some English schools may only have classes in the morning, or others may only offer classes at night. Still others may offer classes during weekend hours only. If these types of schedules do not fit your needs, you may find yourself unable to enrol in a class. For this reason, you may wish to consider English online learning. These types of language courses are offered completely through the Internet or distance education. As long as you have a computer, a microphone, speakers and high-speed Internet access, you can successfully participate in an English language course.

English online learning schools may offer their instruction through the use of Skype. Skype is a type of software that enables people to engage in voice chat, which is the perfect substitution for instruction when you are unable to go to a brick and mortar school. Skype is downloaded free from the Internet and is simple to install. It works with most computers and operating systems as well. Other schools may also use WebEx, a webinar software that allows both teacher and students to come together in a virtual room and communicate. Students can ask questions, speak with the instructor or interact with their classmates all from the comfort of their own hom.

Becoming fluent in English is an important step for any recent immigrant to make when they live in an English-speaking country. Whether filling out a job application, speaking with your child's teacher, or reading a rental lease contract, learning to speak English effectively can be both a protection and a pathway to a better life. If you've always wanted to learn English, but you have never had the time to attend a brick and mortar school, you may be able to achieve your goals through English online learning.

How Can You Improve Your Language Skills By Taking An English Speaking Course Online

The internet is completely changing the future of education. Traditional education has taken a hit, as many programs are diverting away from the classroom, traditional methods of delivery. They are instead moving towards online or semi-online modules. English continues to gain worldwide importance and has now superseded other languages as the recognized lingua franca. It is therefore no surprise that communicative competence in English is so important for travel, business and a wide range of professional and academic activities. There are four linguistic skills, reading, writing, listening and speaking. However, only speaking requires practice with a native or near native speaker to completely master and hone. The other skills, writing, listening and reading, can all be practiced and learnt without actual interaction with mother-tongue English speakers. One option to perfect speaking skills is to take an English speaking course online, for real practice with actual English native speakers.

How It Works

Online English speaking courses utilize technology connected to the world wide web. The world is a small global community and the internet offers communication possibilities like never before. Learning and practicing English with an English native speaker can now occur regardless of the learner or speaker's physical location. Many native speakers offer private speaking conversation classes and tutorial sessions with Skype, using webcams for live interaction with non-native English learners. Many schools employ English speakers to instruct conversation classes utilizing advanced whiteboard software. These companies are usually private language schools, career colleges and sometimes even private instructors themselves.

The Benefits of Online Study

Unfortunately oral fluency cannot be properly developed and honed without constant practice with a fluent speaker of English. For many students who do not have exposure to English speakers in their own countries, this is next to impossible. Possibly the only opportunities for practice these students may have is when they travel abroad, encounter foreign tourists, have classes with visiting professors, or speak to online language teachers.

Through native instructors online, students can also refine and learn correct pronunciation, different syllabification variations and practice variations and dialects of English. This is especially true if the learner is exposed to speakers of different dialects. Online conversation classes can also teach students many different idiomatic expressions, cultural customs and appropriate phrases that cannot be learned from school textbooks.

What Online Courses Entail

An English speaking course online can be serious or lighthearted. Expect the instructor to focus on techniques designed to develop oral proficiency; this generally means high student talk times and student interaction. The role of the instructor will likely be that of facilitator, rather than teacher. Still most courses are not entirely unstructured; students are normally provided with an outline which covers various topics and themes to be examined during the course. The instructor will also examine pertinent grammar points and error correct when necessary.

How to Enroll in Online English Courses

The world wide web lists thousands of online conversation courses in English that are offered both privately and through academic institutions.

Learning English Impacts Sports - Importance of Learning English For Athletes

You are watching television. You see your favorite foreign boxer, Manny Pacquiao, who again just knocked out a titled contender. With a bloodied face and a dislocated nose, the opponent is still uncoordinated from the dizzying blows he received. You rise from your seat and shout in victory with your idolized athlete. And then, after the initial victory cries and congratulations, it is now time for the interview.
The interviewer asks, "So Manny, what can you tell us about your fight?"
Manny answers, "I umm.. ahh.. am happy about fight."
Your favorite champion stutters and speaks in an English you cannot understand. You are disappointed and your confidence and awe for him is diminished. Indeed, in news, statistics, interviews and write-ups - the English language dominates the world of Sports.
Here are the reasons why learning English is important for the sports athlete:

  • As an athlete grows in achievements and fame, he is more exposed globally with fans that come from different countries and with different nationalities as well. With English as the most spoken language in the world, being able to express one's self with an easy to understand English enables the athlete to communicate more effectively to fans. Moreover, he can reach more people, express his passion, and even educate listeners through his experiences.
  • Having a good grasp of English lets an athlete communicate better with his staff and coach. It is not uncommon for athletes who are non-native English speakers to have coaches and managerial or promotional staff who have English as their native language.
  • Learning English lets athletes have more opportunities to make money through advertisements. Most international companies like Nike use English as their medium for advertisements. It is common that they take in international sports athletes for their advertisements - sometimes requiring these non-native English speakers to utter a few lines to promote their products. Having a good grasp of English or at least an acceptable accent makes the athlete and the product he endorses more saleable. It will be difficult for people to buy sports drink from a sports figure who cannot even pronounce the product correctly.
  • It makes travelling and staying in other countries more enjoyable and comfortable. It is quite difficult and a bit of a drag to have a translator always following you around. You also do not get to talk to your promoters and business partners directly. It is possible that you may miss out on important details that your translator may fail to include in his translation.
Athletes must therefore not only excel in the sports they do - adding good English to their repertoire may not increase the level of their athletic performance. But, the English language will certainly add to their reputation, fame, salability to the public and the satisfaction of their fans who want to know them better. Learning English is easy and hiring a tutor is something a successful athlete can easily afford. For athletes who are just starting with their careers, learning through online English course is an affordable option and can be of great help in the future.
I am sure your fans will be more than willing to buy "Red Bull," and not really your "Red Burr."
How about Manny Pacquiao? His English is improving now - he is aware that he needs to learn the English language, the current lingua franca of the world.

Tips On Learning English

Learning English Words

Yes, learning the definition of words is a fundamentally important step toward successfully learning the language from which those words are derived. Evidently, many people who begin to learn a new language (any language, not just English) tend to place far too much emphasis on vocabulary building at the expense of learning other elements of the language.
I'm not a language teacher, but I've been speaking English for several decades now, and despite the fact I know many more words than I did ten years ago, my overall linguistic skills have improved very little. It's strictly an anecdotal observation, but if I must draw a conclusion based on that, it would be to focus on grammar as much as word definitions and spelling.

Everyone wants to learn English

Use Guided Lessons

The Internet is a useful too in that it can translate languages. It's a quick reference, but it can't translate sentence structure very well at all. There is no substitute for guided lessons. You can pick up a lot through assimilation in the culture, but there is a lot that will be missed. Even if you're only able to access free online English video courses, you can make substantial progress.

It Takes Commitment to Learn

The negative impression poor language skills create is greater than many people realize. If you want to learn the language, there is no substitute for a proper, structured lesson plan. By merely assimilating the language randomly, you'll create a poor image for your business, as well as your professionalism in the English speaking business world. If you're writing any kind of copy for the web, this is crucial. Mastering a new language is difficult and time-consuming, but the rewards are well worth the effort.

Do you know what I'm saying?

If you can read this, you basically understand English. But you do not learned it until you can write a few sentences, and no one can tell by reading them that English is a secondary language for you. That's what you should strive for. What you achieve through this will be well worth the effort.
